Bangkok Design Festival 2010 Roundup

The Bangkok Design Festival 2010 has finally begun. The event is being held from 20th - 30th November 2010 and the exhibition are being shown around Bangkok. The event is mostly separated in hubs.

Today I got a chance to visit some of these hubs around Bangkok. I took some photos of all the super creative art by both from the Thai and the foreigner artists.

Please keep in mind that I am not a professional photographers and I took all these photos from my old HTC Hero phone so I apologize beforehand for any blurry images I took. Let’s enjoy..

TCDC at Emporium Mall

We have arrived..

Some cool business cards I stumbled upon at the TCDC Artist directories

First thing you see at the event is the Explanation of what design is in both Thai and English

The main exhibition showed the timeline of creative invention from multiple countries such as the US, France, Finland, Brazil, Germany, Japan, Italy and Thailand.

I was surprised that they are able to actually obtain these old stuff like the car in the second image. You can still see the cracks in the colors of the car.

This place is probably the best place to find the material if you are some sort of a physical product manufacturer.

There are hundreds of materials categorized into types for you to observe and touch. The best thing about this place is not that it allows you to touch the material as much as you like, but it also tells you where to buy these materials or where to contact the suppliers.

Before we left TCDC, We’ve visited the gift shop. These are all imported design products mostly from the UK and guess what, they came with an incredibly high price tag.

Bangkok Art And Culture Center

The first thing we saw was the Mini exhibition featuring the mini model cars painted on/modified by artists.

Also the work from Jordi Labanda - “Cosi Fan Tutte” really catches our attention. They have these sketchy artistic illustration style works hanging on the spiral wall showing off his awesome skills.

Stop by at this awesome ice cream store called “Icedea” which combines the food exhibition with awesome black & White symmetry design. It was an amazing experience.

We are now at a poster showcase under the concept of “going green”. Some of them are very impressive, for instance, “You don’t have to be a Hero to save the world” with this phrase, it left you wonder why and then a small text down below, it says, “Do Nothing” which really is the simples things you can do to save the world. Do not drive, do not smoke… This is what we called, a minimal concept.

Some taste of modern art.

We went for some old school taste with LOMO camera effects on my Android :)

When we was about to leave, we saw these incredibly huge statues with a year on their chest. One is 1914 and the other is 1939. I don’t really know what each represents. My guess is that these are to represent the women during both of the World War 1 and 2 where women are being abused a lot. I can tell by the year, imprinted on their chest which are the beginning of both wars (from the top of my head)

Wrap Up

I got to say, I am very impressed with the event the Thai creative community is using to try to push the creative industry in Thailand into the next level. Even though, there are not much people around, mostly foreigners.

I would encourage all the designers and artists that live around Bangkok area to check this event out, because this event are mainly created for the local artists to be inspired. I feel very sad when seeing most of the visitors are foreigners. Please pay a visit and share some experience here.
